RDPiO GPU-Accelerated Remote Desktop

RDPiO is a remote desktop (RDP) client for Windows, written from scratch in Rust. It decodes H.264 on the GPU, spans multiple monitors, redirects every device you use, and adds Hyper Accelerator: a 120 fps stream decoded about 4–6 ms after capture on a home network.

MEASURED

Past RDP's frame cap

Hyper Accelerator is RDPiO's own stream on encrypted UDP, built for work and gaming at once.

120 fps

Game mode

Against RDP's default of about 30. Hyper also runs at 144 or 240 Hz.

3–4 ms

Capture to decoded

Median at 2560×1440 with H.264. HEVC adds about 2 ms.

−⅓

Bandwidth with HEVC

About a third less than H.264, picked automatically when the GPU supports it.

1.8 ms

Encode per 1440p frame

Straight to NVENC, with lost packets rebuilt by forward error correction.

Measured on an RTX 4080 SUPER host over a home network.

CORE_CAPABILITIES

A full RDP client, from the wire up

Its own RDP stack in Rust: no third-party RDP library, with TLS, sign-in and video decoding taken from the operating system.

GPU Decoding

H.264 decoded by the D3D11 video processor, with D3D12 as an option. AVC420, AVC444, ClearCodec, RemoteFX and more, plus FSR 1.0 and RTX Video Super Resolution upscaling.

Multiple Monitors

Span the remote desktop across every screen, or open one borderless window per monitor.

Full Redirection

Any number of drives including mapped network drives, clipboard text, images, files and folders of any size, audio, microphone, camera, printer, and Teams optimization.

Windows 365 and AVD

Sign in to Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop, with workspace feeds, RDSTLS, Reverse Connect, and TLS with NLA/CredSSP.

UDP Side-Band

Experimental RDP-UDP transport with TLS over UDP, retransmission and automatic fallback to TCP.

Signed Self-Updates

Authenticode-signed releases. Updates install only with a valid Ed25519 signature, a matching hash and a newer version, so they can't be rolled back.

Verify: `rdpio` is on PATH and the launcher opens. It keeps itself up to date from signed releases.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask

What is RDPiO?

RDPiO is a remote desktop (RDP) client for Windows written from scratch in Rust, with no third-party RDP library. It decodes H.264 on the GPU, spans multiple monitors, redirects drives, clipboard, audio, microphone, camera and printers, and adds Hyper Accelerator for low-latency streaming.

Why is Remote Desktop capped at 30 fps?

The Windows RDP host limits sessions to about 30 fps by default, and Microsoft documents 60 fps as the maximum after tuning, whichever client you use. RDPiO's Hyper Accelerator streams around that limit at 120, 144 or 240 Hz over its own encrypted UDP channel.

Can I play games over RDPiO?

Yes. Hyper Accelerator's game mode runs at 120 fps, with the stream decoded about 4–6 ms after capture on a home network. Capture to decoded measured a 3–4 ms median on an RTX 4080 SUPER host at 2560×1440.

Does RDPiO work with Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop?

Yes. RDPiO signs in to Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop, reads workspace feeds, and supports RDSTLS, Reverse Connect, and TLS with NLA/CredSSP.

What are RDPiO's system requirements?

A 64-bit Windows PC with an AVX2 CPU (Intel Haswell or AMD Excavator, 2013 or newer) and the WebView2 runtime for the launcher. Installing needs no admin rights; only the Hyper host service does. The Linux build is headless for now.

Is RDPiO open source?

Yes, under the MIT license. Releases are Authenticode-signed, and the built-in updater installs only updates whose Ed25519 signature checks out and whose version is newer.
