searchio vs Firecrawl, Jina Reader and Tavily
searchio is a free, open-source alternative to Firecrawl, Jina Reader and Tavily. It searches the web and turns any page into LLM-ready markdown with no API key, 100% on your own machine or hosted through SwarmIO. In testing it read 23 of 26 pages behind DataDome, Cloudflare, Akamai and PerimeterX on the first attempt.
searchio vs Firecrawl vs Jina Reader vs Tavily: Comparison
Updated October 2026. The difference that matters most: who holds the key, and whose servers fetch the page.

| API key | None | Required | Optional; keyless use is rate-limited | Required |

Questions engineers ask
Is there a free alternative to Firecrawl?
Yes. searchio is free and open source under Apache-2.0. It reads any URL into LLM-ready markdown and searches the web with no API key, running on your own machine. A hosted version is available through SwarmIO on credits.
Does searchio need an API key?
No. Search, page reading and product lookup need no key and no account. Only the optional research tool, which writes a sourced answer with a language model, needs an Anthropic or DeepSeek key.
How does searchio read pages behind bot protection?
It climbs a three-tier ladder: plain HTTP/2 first, then a request with a real browser's TLS and HTTP/2 fingerprint, then a headless browser engine. It only climbs when a page refuses or comes back unreadable, and it remembers per domain which tier worked. In testing it read 23 of 26 pages behind DataDome, Cloudflare, Akamai and PerimeterX.
Can searchio run 100% locally?
Yes. Install it with pip, run the Docker image ghcr.io/ioserviceslabs/searchio-mcp, or start it with npx. Pages are fetched from your own machine, and searchio never sends your credentials anywhere.
How does searchio turn a web page into LLM-readable text?
It extracts the main content as markdown with trafilatura, dropping navigation, ads and boilerplate. PDFs are read as text, and product pages are parsed from their schema.org data and meta tags into structured product fields.
Which AI agents can use searchio?
Any MCP client, including Claude Code, Claude Desktop and Cursor. Its MCP tools include search, read_url, search_items, search_local, youtube_transcript and research. It also runs as a CLI and an HTTP API.
